Pete Seeger - 1919 May 3 - 2014 January 14

     Facts:

This is the one-hundredth anniversary of Pete Seeger's birth. He was a folk singer with a big and wonderful voice. He started as the young voice of The Weavers and ended up as the famous old man of the American folk music scene. He was also politically active .

I never saw Pete Seeger in person, but I listened to his performances on records. When he died I learned specifics about his political activism from web pages on Wikipedia and some other sources. He sang and raised money for Stalin, Hitler, Castro, Ho Chi Minh, strong and political labor unions, helping "the poor" by taking wealth by force from "the rich," Ku Klux Klan members and sex pervert misogynists for US President, Martin Luther King's Civil Right's movement, cleaning up the polluted Hudson River, the Obama campaign, global-warming-climate-change politics, and big government in general.

During the McCarthy era, on 1955 August 18, Seeger was subpoenaed to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and refused to name personal and political associations, a difficult moment of character. Good for him!

In a world of fuzzy facts, I believe these are true causes he supported. What I learned and what I felt I put on a separate page.

I have been to concerts with other folk singers who specifically named Pete Seeger as a political hero. These include Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie, Linda Ronstadt, Gordon Lightfoot, and Peter and Paul without Mary.
